Brockton High School has revamped student schedules that will begin with the 26-27 school year, and families are invited to take part in one of two informational nights to learn more about the goals behind the change.
Informational nights will be open to current and incoming students' families, with families having a choice of attending on either Tuesday, June 23, or Wednesday, June 24. Both sessions will last from 5:30-7 p.m. on those evenings.
Beginning in September 2026, BHS will move from six 55-minute class periods, to four 86-90 minute minute blocks that meet on a rotating basis. This change helps support the transition to MassCore, a state-recommended program of study intended to align high school coursework with college and workforce expectations.
Why is Brockton High School making this change?
With the elimination of the MCAS exam, Massachusetts and Brockton Public Schools are re-calibrating graduation requirements to ensure students meet core competencies.
Brockton High's current schedule lacks the flexibility needed to ensure students meet these comprehensive graduation requirements. This new schedule better serves all students and also allows for the increased needs of multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
With the increase to eight periods in the schedule and four blocks meeting per day, students have the opportunity to explore more courses of study and dive deeper into the lessons each course provides. These longer class blocks, for example, allow more time for science labs and other hands-on learning.
